NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington men’s tennis freshman Danil Zelenkov was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week after helping the Colonials to their first victory of the 2013 season on Friday.

Zelenkov, who picks up his first weekly conference honor, went undefeated in the No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles positions to lift GW (1-1) to a 4-3 victory over East Carolina at the Regency Sport and Health Club in McLean, Va. The loss was the first of the year for the Pirates.

The Skopje, Macedonia, native first teamed with doubles partner junior Nikita Fomin – the No. 9 duo in the Atlantic Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) – to earn an 8-7 (4) victory over ECU’s Damien Brenard and John Schmitt. Zelenkov went on to defeat Brenard in the third-flight singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Through two dual matches this spring, Zelenkov is 1-1 in singles play while he and Fomin are 2-0 in doubles.

Zelenkov and GW hit the road for the first time this season when the squad travels to No. 67 Old Dominion on Friday, Feb. 8. Action in Norfolk, Va., is slated for 1 p.m.
