WASHINGTON – George Washington men’s tennis returns to road action this weekend with a match at Old Dominion on Sunday morning. First serve at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center is slated for 11 a.m.
GW (1-4) is coming off consecutive losses at the ECAC Indoor Championships last weekend. All four of the Colonials' losses this season have come against nationally ranked top-65 opponents.
Junior Francisco Dias, who is ranked No. 79 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, owns a team-best record of 2-1 this spring, while Julius Tverijonas is 2-2 in his rookie season. Competing as the No. 1 doubles pair, Dias and Tverijonas are 4-1 overall.
ODU (6-2) fell to No. 46 Georgia Tech, 5-2, last weekend and hosts the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday before welcoming GW on Sunday. The Monarchs are led by No. 44 Carlos Lopez Villa, who owns an 8-0 dual-match record and has only dropped one set this spring. Zvonimir Podvinski is 7-1 in singles play, and he and doubles partner Dante Terenzio have combined to go 6-2.
Last season GW knocked off then-No. 67 ODU, 4-3, in its first road match of 2013. Senior Nikita Fomin, sophomore Danil Zelenkov, senior Ulrik Thomsen and Alexander van Gils (’13) all picked up singles victories to lift the Colonials to the upset win.
