Feb. 25, 2014
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington senior Nikita Fomin was named Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Co-Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. He shares the honor with No. 59 Alexis Heugas of 29th-ranked VCU.
Fomin nabbed the weekly accolade after going undefeated in singles and doubles to help GW (2-4) to a 5-2 road win at Old Dominion on Sunday and hand the Monarchs their first loss against an unranked team this season. The award marks the second of the Moscow, Russia native’s career as he was named A-10 Performer of the Week on March 6, 2013, and the second for the Colonials this season after Julius Tverijonas was named Rookie Performer of the Week on Feb. 11.
He first teamed up with sophomore Danil Zelenkov for an 8-4 decision over ODU’s Darragh Glavin and Koen Wiggemans in the No. 2 doubles match to help the Buff and Blue secure the doubles point. Fomin then held the Monarchs' Dante Terenzio to just two games as he rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Fomin and GW open outdoor action with a three-match North Carolina road swing this weekend. The Colonials open the weekend at No. 70 Charlotte on Friday, then face No. 60 UNC Wilmington on Saturday before wrapping the weekend at East Carolina on Sunday.
