March 4, 2014
NEWPORTNEWS, Va. – Senior Ulrik Thomsen clinched all three matches this weekend to help George Washington to three straight wins in North Carolina and was subsequently named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Thomsen clinched three consecutive matches in No. 5 singles and went unbeaten in No. 3 doubles with classmate Viktor Svensson to lift the Colonials to wins over No. 70 Charlotte (4-0), No. 60 UNC Wilmington (4-3) and East Carolina (4-1). After knocking off two nationally ranked teams and extending their winning streak to four matches, the Colonials broke into the ITA National Team Rankings on Tuesday at No. 55.
In singles action, the Copenhagen, Denmark, native first took care of the 49ers’ Alex Calott, 6-1, 6-3, on Friday before defeating the Seahawks’ Karan Salwan, 7-5, 6-4, on Saturday and earning a 6-2, 6-4 decision over the Pirates’ Damien Brenard on Sunday. Thomsen and Svensson teamed up to down Charlotte’s duo of Paul Cisti and Forrest Edwards, 8-3, on Friday, then earned an 8-4 win over ECU’s Miles Holvoret and Patriek Wolterbeek on Sunday. The pair was up, 6-4, over UNC Wilmington’s Zach Hublitz and Santtu Leskinen, but GW won the doubles point and the match went unfinished.
Thomsen is 5-5 overall in singles on the spring season, including 4-2 in the fifth flight. He and Svensson are also 4-4 in doubles play. The weekly award marks the third for the senior, as he was tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week on Feb. 14, 2011, and Performer of the Week on March 7, 2011.
Thomsen and GW look to extend their winning streak on Saturday with a 12 p.m. match at Navy.
