March 11, 2014
WASHINGTON – George Washington’s No. 1 doubles pair of junior Francisco Dias and rookie Julius Tverijonas have earned a No. 57 national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the governing body announced on Tuesday.
The duo is the first Colonials doubles team to earn a national ranking since Dias and then-senior Leonardo Lapentti debuted at No. 80 in March 2013 then earned a No. 90 ranking in April.
Dias and Tverijonas went unbeaten in two matches in three days to help No. 60 GW extend its road win streak to six contests with victories at Navy (6-1) and No. 62 Louisiana-Lafayette (4-3). GW’s top-ranked team first defeated the Midshipmen’s Austin Jones and Thomas Pecor, 8-1, on Saturday, then earned an 8-5 decision over the Ragin’ Cajun’s Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson on Monday.
The junior-freshman tandem owns a team-best record of 6-3 this spring and are currently riding a three-match unbeaten streak as GW heads into two contests in as many days at No. 66 Tulane and Louisiana State on Wednesday and Thursday.
First serves against the Green Wave and the Tigers are both slated for 4 p.m. ET (3 p.m. CT).
