NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington senior Nikita Fomin was named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The senior went unbeaten in singles and doubles to help GW (8-5) to a 1-1 record as it wrapped its Spring Break trip in Louisiana, which was highlighted by a 4-0 sweep of No. 66 Tulane. He was also a key component in the Colonials jumping to No. 54 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national team rankings this week.
Against Tulane on Wednesday, Fomin first teamed up with No. 2 doubles partner sophomore Danil Zelenkov for an 8-2 win over Sebastian Rey and Alex Van Cott as GW secured the doubles point over the Big Green. He was leading Dominik Koepfer, 7-5, 4-3, at the No. 1 singles spot when the match was called after the Colonials claimed their fourth point to seal the victory.
Competing in their third match in four days at LSU on Thursday, Fomin and Zelenkov defeated Andrew Korined and Eric Perez, 8-7 in No. 2 doubles action. The Moscow, Russia, product then downed Korinek by set scores of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles in the Colonials’ narrow 4-3 loss to the Tigers.
Fomin owns an overall singles record of 12-7 and he is 6-2 in dual matches this spring. He is currently riding a 10-match unbeaten streak, which includes six victories, dating back to Feb. 14. Fomin and Zelenkov are 10-6 overall in doubles and own a 7-4 record this spring season. The pair is also amid a three-match win streak and has won four of its last five matches.
Fomin and the Colonials open home outdoor home action on Saturday, March 22, when they welcome Morgan State to the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 1 p.m. match.
