WASHINGTON – No. 54 George Washington men’s tennis will compete in two matches in as many days this weekend, beginning with its outdoor home opener on Saturday against Morgan State before hitting the road for UMBC on Sunday. The Colonials welcome the Bears to the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon campus for a 3 p.m. contest, then travel to face the Retrievers at 1 p.m. the following day.

GW (8-5) is coming off a 3-1 week of action in Louisiana over Spring Break. After topping Navy, No. 62 Louisiana and No. 66 Tulane, the Colonials earned their highest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national team ranking of the season this week as the No. 54 program. They have won seven of their last eight matches, all on the road, and look to continue their success when they open outdoor play at home.

Three-time Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week senior Nikita Fomin paces GW with an overall singles record of 12-7 and a 6-2 dual-match mark this spring. He enters Saturday’s contest with a 10-match unbeaten streak that includes six victories, dating back to Feb. 14. Sophomore Danil Zelenkov is 13-7 overall in singles this year and is 7-3 on the spring season. He and Fomin are 10-6 as the Colonials’ No. 2 doubles duo and they own a 7-4 record in dual-match play. The pair is currently on a three-match win streak and has won four of their last five bouts.

Morgan State (1-6) comes to GW after dropping a 7-0 decision at Navy on March 11. The Bears host Monmouth on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before coming to the GW Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. They are 5-25 overall in singles and 2-6 in doubles. GW and Morgan State last met during the 2004 season when the Colonials earned a 7-0 sweep of the Bears at home.

UMBC (9-6) is currently on a three-match losing streak, falling to Seattle (4-3), Nevada (6-1) and Sacramento State (6-1) to snap a seven-match win streak from Feb. 15 – March 9. The Retrievers open a four-match homestand at the UMBC Tennis Complex, beginning with the Colonials on Sunday. The last time the two squads matched up was in 2009 when GW earned a 6-1 victory on its home courts.
