Mustafa Gencsoy Named A-10 Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University freshman Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Ayazaga Isik) was the named the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Colonials' two A-10 matches this past weekend, the conference office announced on Monday, March 21. Gencsoy is the third GW player to be honored by the A-10 this season, and second freshman to earn Rookie of the Week honors.

Gencsoy went undefeated in the Colonials' A-10 match at Temple on Friday, March 18, to help GW blank the Owls 7-0. He teamed with classmate Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN) at second doubles for an 8-3 win over Elao Ziu and Matt Struble, while also winning at second singles, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-4 over Yhonny Murray.

On Saturday, March 19, at Saint Joseph's, Gencsoy remained perfect winning again at second doubles and singles as the Colonials fell 5-2 to the Hawks. At No. 2 doubles, Gencsoy and Salyer topped Jimmy Holland and Antonio Aniello, 8-5, before handing Holland a 6-4, 6-3 defeat at second singles.

With the pair of victories in singles play, Gencsoy improved his overall record on the season to 8-4 at the second spot.

GW (6-8) returns to action when it travels to Richmond, VA, on Friday, March 25, to take on the Spiders at 2:30 p.m.
