March 24, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington senior Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Ayazaga Isik) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the of the Week, while in the same voting, freshman Yan Levinski (Melbourne, Australia/Brighton Grammar School) was tabbed with Rookie of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday.

Gencsoy, a three-time All Conference selection, went 2-0 this week in singles competition, playing from the No. 1 position and earning wins against Richmond's Doug Banker (6-2, 6-2) on Mar. 21 and Duquesne's Alex Mast (6-3, 7-5) the following day. The senior was also 2-0 in doubles play from the No. 1 position, where he teamed with fellow senior Elliott Daniels (Goldsboro, NC/Heritage Academy). The duo downed the Spiders (8-7) and the Dukes (8-5) to improve their record together to 3-0. Gencsoy, who was also named A-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 18, is now 20-4 overall in singles play this season, including a perfect mark of 7-0 versus A-10 foes.

Levinski was named Rookie of the Week after he won two matches from the No. 2 position in singles play, besting Richmond's Michael Sommer (7-5, 6-4) and Duquesne's Michael Ortega (2-6, 6-4, 6-2). The freshman also went 2-0 in third-flight doubles action. Levinski, a native of Australia, improved to 13-1 overall in singles play in 2008, including a perfect 7-0 against conference opponents.
