March 27, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington men’s tennis freshman Danil Zelenkov has been tabbed the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
The freshman went undefeated in both singles and doubles play to help the 66th-ranked Colonials (9-5) to a 5-2 win over Richmond on Saturday and improve their unbeaten conference record to 3-0.
The weekly nod marks the third for Zelenkov this spring – the most by any freshman in the A-10 – as he was named Rookie Performer of the Week on March 6 and Feb. 5.
Against the Spiders, Zelenkov earned a 6-4, 6-4 No. 3 singles victory over Paul Nahon before he teamed up with junior Nikita Fomin for an 8-5 No. 2 doubles win over Nahon and Ethan Dunbar. The Skopje, Macedonia, native posted his seventh singles victory in his past eight matches and is now 8-4 in dual-match competition this spring.
No. 66 GW welcomes local foe George Mason to the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match. The Colonials then host James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
