Zelenkov Earns Fifth A-10 Men's Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week Nod

Danil Zelenkov earned his third straight, and fifth overall, A-10 Men's Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week award on Tuesday.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington freshman Danil Zelenkov was named Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Co-Rookie Performer of the Week honor after guiding the Colonials to a 2-0 weekend, the league announced on Tuesday.

Zelenkov went undefeated at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles to help No. 67 GW (12-5) push its winning streak to five, with a 5-2 victory over St. John's at home on Senior Day on Saturday and a 6-1 win at Georgetown on Sunday.

The weekly conference award marks the third straight for the Skopje, Macedonia product and fifth this season, marking the most weekly awards given to an A-10 men's tennis freshman in a season since 1999.

On Saturday against St. John's, Zelenkov downed the Red Storm's Mike Lampa, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 singles spot. He and No. 2 doubles partner, junior Nikita Fomin, led the St. John's tandem of Michael-John Every and Vasko Mladenov, 6-5, when the match was called after GW secured the doubles point at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. At Georgetown on Sunday, the freshman standout earned a 6-3, 6-4 singles victory over Reese Milner, and he and Fomin downed the Hoyas' duo of Shane Korber and Alex Tropiano, 8-5.

With a 12-4 record on the season, Zelenkov is currently riding a five-match singles winning streak dating back to March 14 and has been victorious in 10 of his last 11 outings.

Zelenkov and GW return to action on Friday, April 12 at A-10 foe Charlotte. First serve in Charlotte, N.C., is scheduled for 12 p.m.
