NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington sophomore Danil Zelenkov has been named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week in the league’s final round of weekly awards.

Zelenkov earns the accolade after helping GW to a pair of wins to wrap the regular season last weekend and improve to 14-6 overall and 3-0 in A-10 action. The weekly honor marks the second of the season for Zelenkov and ninth for the Colonials’ squad.

The Skopje, Macedonia native rolled to consecutive straight-set singles wins as GW downed district rival Georgetown, 5-2, and blanked A-10 newcomer George Mason, 7-0, to move the Buff and Blue within one point (8-7) of the Patriots in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings.

In GW’s home finale and Senior Day match on Friday, Zelenkov earned a 6-3, 6-0 decision over the Hoyas’ Alex Tropiano at the No. 3 singles spot. He then teamed up with senior Nikita Fomin for an 8-3 No. 2 doubles win over Mason’s Tanner Baine and Taylor Sargent before he topped James Lange, 6-4, 6-3, in third-flight singles on Saturday in the Colonials’ final match of the regular season.

The sophomore standout owns a team-best overall singles record of 19-7 and a 13-3 mark this spring season. Zelenkov is currently riding a 15-match unbeaten streak that dates back to Feb. 23, and he has won 12 of those matches while three have gone unfinished. He and Fomin are 13-7 overall, including 10-5 in No. 2 doubles, and the duo has gone 8-2 in their last 10 bouts.

Zelenkov and GW enter the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., this week as the No. 1 seed. The Colonials received a first-round bye and will face the winner of eighth-seeded Dayton and ninth-seeded Saint Louis on Friday at 10 a.m.
