Men's Tennis' Mustafa Gencsoy Earns Second Straight Atlantic 10 All-Conference Honor

April 20, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington University sophomores Mustafa Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Ayazaga Isik) and Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN/St. Paul Academy) were each honored by the Atlantic 10 on Thursday, as the league office announced its men's tennis all-conference and academic all-conference teams. Gencsoy earned A-10 All-Conference accolades for the second straight season, while Salyer was one of seven student-athletes in the league to garner academic all-conference honors.

Gencsoy, who was the Colonials' top singles player, posted an 8-6 dual-match record at No. 1 during the spring, including a 4-1 record against conference opponents and a 3-1 mark at the A-10 Championship to help lead GW to an eighth-place finish. In his last 10 singles matches, Gencsoy went 7-3. With Gencsoy's accolade, it marks the sixth straight year in which at least one GW athlete has been voted to the men's tennis all-conference team.

Salyer, meanwhile, recorded an 8-7 dual-match singles mark during the spring campaign playing predominantly at the No. 2 position. He went 3-2 against conference opponents and also posted a 3-1 mark playing at No. 2 at the A-10 Championship to help the Colonials claim eighth at the three-day tournament.

In addition, both Gencsoy and Salyer teamed together at first doubles and the pair won two dual-matches during the regular season and two contests at the A-10 Championship.

Voting for the all-conference team was conducted by the league's head coaches, while a separate vote for the academic all-conference team was conducted by the league's sports information directors.
