GW's Zelenkov Named A-10 Men's Tennis Co-Rookie Performer of the Week
Colonials Freshman Picks Up Fifth Straight Weekly Award, Seventh Overall
April 23, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – After going undefeated in singles and doubles in George Washington’s regular-season finale last week at then-No. 29 VCU, freshman Danil Zelenkov has been tabbed Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Co-Rookie Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Zelenkov shares the honor with Charlotte’s Jordi Massalle Ferrer. The weekly nod marks his fifth straight and league-record seventh this season. The Skopje, Macedonia native proved tough to beat last week in the Colonials’ regular-season finale at VCU. Despite GW falling, 4-2, to its newest conference foe, Zelenkov pulled out a straight-set No. 3 singles victory as well as a No. 2 doubles win.
Zelenkov and doubles partner junior Nikita Fomin defeated Michal Voscek and Max Wennakoski, 8-5, to help the Colonials secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead over the host Rams. The freshman standout then limited Alejandro Argente to three games in a 6-1, 6-2 No. 3 singles victory.
The rookie is now 18-8 in singles overall and 15-4 this spring, competing primarily at the No. 3 position. He is currently riding a seven-match winning streak and has won 12 of his last 13 singles matches. He and Fomin are 19-7 overall as a doubles pair and 12-5 as the No. 2 tandem in dual-match competition.
GW and Zelenkov return to the court on Friday, April 26 in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship. The second-seeded Colonials received a bye through the first round and will face the winner of the seventh-seeded Richmond and 10th-seeded Fordham match on Friday at 1 p.m.
