Colonials of the Week - GW Men's Tennis

April 27, 2015

The George Washington men's tennis team became back-to-back Atlantic 10 Champions on Sunday as the Colonials downed VCU in the title match for the second straight season at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

On Friday, fourth-seeded GW shut out Dayton, 4-0, to advance to the semifinals after receiving a first round bye. The Colonials then upset top-seeded Richmond, 4-1, on Saturday to earn a spot in the finals for the sixth consecutive season. On Sunday, the Buff and Blue battled to knock off a strong VCU team, 4-2, as GW earned the doubles point before juniors Danil Zelenkov (No. 2) and Cahit Kapukiran (No. 6) and senior Francisco Dias (No.1) tallied singles victories to clinch the match and the crown.

GW won its first A-10 title in 1979 and has now won four of the last five Championships (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015).

GW (13-12), toughened by a challenging schedule in which they defeated two ITA nationally ranked programs among seven top-70 opponents, will next compete in the NCAA Tournament after earning the A-10's automatic bid.
