The UVA Ranked 1 Invitational, held at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va., features 64 players that comprise four 16-player singles draws and four eight-team doubles draws. The prestigious event welcomes 16 players ranked among the nation’s top 125 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, and each school is allowed to enter one unranked player for every ranked player it has competing.
Joining the Colonials at the elite tournament are competitors from Binghamton, Elon, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, UNC Wilmington, VCU, host Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Senior Nikita Fomin enters the season with a No. 70 national ranking while junior Francisco Dias debuts at No. 94. The pair, along with senior Viktor Svensson and sophomore Danil Zelenkov, will compete in singles. Dias and Svensson will team up for doubles play while Fomin will compete with 2012-13 partner Zelenkov.
At last year’s invitational, Fomin won four straight singles matches – highlighted by upsets over two nationally ranked opponents – en route to the Gold Singles championship, as he became the first-ever GW men’s tennis player to win a main draw at the elite tournament. Dias reached the Orange Singles title match, but ultimately fell to the then-No. 2 player in the country Jarmere Jenkins of host Virginia.
Seniors Sinan Ipeker and Ulrik Thomsen and rookie Daniel O’Connor will represent GW at the Georgetown Classic. The event serves as the Buff and Blue debut for both Ipeker and O’Connor.
The three-day event will be held at the Hoyas’ McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex as well as the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials will compete against Christopher Newport, host Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Norfolk State, UMBC and NJCAA member ASA College throughout the weekend. Action is set to commence on Friday at 9 a.m.
The three Colonials’ players will all compete in the singles draw and Ipeker and Thomsen will team up for doubles.
