Borenstein, Stern Crack Top-25 at Navy
Sept. 18, 2010
ANNAPOLIS, MD -Zach Borenstein and Jessica Stern both cracked the top 25 in their respective events at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club on Saturday afternoon. Bornstein finished in 25th place (out of 89) in the 8K Navy Invitational with a time of 25:29.71, improving on his 2009 time by a full minute. Stern completed the 5K Salty Dog Invite with a time of 23:53.5, finishing in 25th place (out of 115).
The Colonial men finished in seventh place out of nine competing schools after fielding only five runners. Sophomore Alex Dadds finished in 50th place with a time of 26:31.71 while freshman Daniel Kleine came in 56th overall in 26:45.61. Freshman James Stern placed 68th after completing the course in 27:21.48 and walk-on freshman Rex Sheikh completed his debut race in 28:17.09, finishing in 82nd place.
"We were lacking one of our top runners in David McCutcheon and Stern was battling back from mono. I really think we will be a different team in two weeks; we are only going to get stronger" said head coach Brian Beil.
The Colonials were victims of small rosters on both the men's and women's sides, fielding the smallest race roster with only five runners competing in each event. Beil elected to hold out All-American senior Megan Hogan for the second consecutive week to concentrate on individual nationals.
On the women's side, Stern was followed by sophomore Heather Stevens who finished in 28th place with a time of 23:57.7. The trio of junior Emily Foster, sophomore Julia Weir and freshman Kelly Bartz finished in 49th, 50th and 51st place, respectively. Foster completed the course in 25:39.2 while Weir was right behind her with a time of 25:39.8. Bartz followed at 25:48.0
"Our top two raced well, but obviously the times aren't there right now. We need to keep working." said Beil.
The GW cross country team returns to action next Saturday at the Paul Short Invite on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
