Men's Track Trio Earns A-10 All-Academic Honors
Day, Shaffer and Wills recognized for academic achivements
The trio represents 30 percent of the 10-person All-Academic Team. In order to be considered for the honor, student-athletes must boast at least a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average and be a primary contributor to their team's success in competition.
Day, who also earned All-Academic honors for the 2017 Cross Country season, won the gold medal and set a new program record in the 3000m at the 2018 A-10 Indoor Track Championships. His time of 8:18.93 narrowly missed the Atlantic 10 record. He was also a member of the gold medal and A-10 record setting Distance Medley Relay team at this year's championship. In addition to the 3000m, Day also holds GW's program records for the indoor 800m (1:56.78) and indoor 1000m (2:29.73).
In the classroom, Day boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.87 as an Environmental Studies major. He is a five-time member of the GW Department of Athletics Dean's List, including a 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2016 semester.
Shaffer continues to add to his impressive academic resume with another A-10 All-Academic honor. He has previously earned the recognition for cross country (2017), indoor track (2017) and outdoor track (2016, 2017) in addition to being a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District pick for outdoor track in 2016. Academically, he holds a 3.95 cumulative GPA as a Systems Engineering major. In 2016 he was the recipient of the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Shaffer is an All-Conference performer in the mile after a third-place finish (4:09.74) at the 2018 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship. A week later, he set a new program record (for the third time this season) in the mile with a time of 4:07.64 at the BU Last Chance Meet. The Satellite Beach, Florida, native was also a member of the aforementioned Distance Medley Relay team that set GW and A-10 records at this year's indoor championship. He holds school records for the outdoor 800m, 1500m, 4x800m Relay and Sprint Medley Relay in addition to the indoor 4x800m Relay.
Wills makes his first career All-Academic team appearance after winning the gold medal in the mile at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a then program-record time of 4:09.29. He was also a member of the gold medal and A-10 record-setting DMR team along with Shaffer and Day, in addition to contributing to the school record for the outdoor 4x800m relay.
In the classroom, the sophomore Business Administration major holds a 3.44 cumulative GPA and is a three-time selection to the GW Department of Athletics Dean's List.
