Cross Country Ready for NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday

Nov. 8, 2017

ON THE LINE: George Washington's men's and women's cross country programs will line up with the best teams in the region at Friday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on the campus of Lehigh University.

SCHEDULE: The women's 6,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men's 10,000-meter installment at approximately 11:45 a.m.

AT STAKE: The top two teams at each of the nine regionals around the country, along with 13 additional at-large teams, will advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championship, November 18, in Louisville, Kentucky.

After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender will be selected to compete at the NCAA Championship. The top four finishers at each regional that are not on a qualifying time will advance (but must finish within the top 25 at the regional).

LAST TIME OUT: The men's team put forth its best showing in program history at the Atlantic 10 Championship two weeks ago, finishing in third place overall out of 14 competing teams. The Colonials had a pair of All-Conference performers in graduate student Matt Lange (6th overall) and senior Carter Day (11th overall). All five of the men's scoring runners finished in the top 30 to clinch the highest team finish in program history and best since 1993 (4th of 8). Additionally, freshman Jackson Cronin earned a spot on the All-Rookie team by being among the top-seven rookie finishers in the race (37th overall).

The women's team equaled last year's A-10 Championship performance by finishing in sixth place. Junior Madison Yerke picked up her first-ever All-Conference award for cross country by finishing in 14th place. Margaret Coogans was honored on the All-Rookie team by being among the top-seven freshman finishers. She finished in 64th place.

REGIONALLY RANKED: The men's team maintained its Mid-Atlantic Regional Ranking of No. 11 following the Atlantic 10 Championship performance.

THE COURSE: The Goodman Cross Country Course can accommodate four race distances and navigates through a landscape of cornfields, green space, wooded areas and campus scenery. The course has hosted three NCAA Championship meets (1979, 1983, 1993) and is the site of the annual Paul Short Run, the largest intercollegiate cross country race in the nation.

THE FIELD: The women's field features three teams that are nationally ranked in No. 9 Villanova (1st in Mid-Atlantic Region), No. 19 Penn State (2nd) and No. 17 Georgetown (3rd).

On the men's side, there are no teams from the Mid-Atlantic Region in the latest National Poll.
