Nov. 14, 2017

WASHINGTON - George Washington men's cross country seniors Carter Day and Chris Shaffer were both named to the Atlantic 10 Cross Country All-Academic Team, the league announced on Tuesday.

It marks the first time that Day has been honored on an A-10 All-Academic Team. The Windsor, Ontario, native is coming off a standout cross country season that saw him earn All-Conference honors at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship with an 11th-place finish. He set new personal records at all four distances competed this fall (5K, 6K, 8K, 10K) and tallied a pair of top-10 finishes at the Mount St. Mary's Duals (5th place) and the William & Mary Invitational (8th place).

In the classroom, Day boasts a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average as an Environmental Studies major and is a four-time selection to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. He has also made four appearances on the GW Department of Athletics Deans List, including a 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2016 semester.

Shaffer adds another academic achievement to his resume in Tuesday's selection, the first of his career for cross country. He previously has earned A-10 All-Academic honors for indoor track (2017) and outdoor track (2016, 2017) in addition to being a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District pick for outdoor track in 2016. He has also previously been the recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he boasts a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average as a Systems Engineering major.

Shaffer placed 23rd overall at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship and has set new personal records in the 8K (25:21.40) and 10K (32:14.10) this fall.
