COLLEGE STATION, TX - George Washington sophomore guard Erica Rivera scored a career-high 13 points off the bench, but the Colonials committed a season-high 29 turnovers that led to 28 points for No. 3/3 Texas A&M in a 78-59 loss to the Aggies in front of a crowd of 6,892 at Reed Arena Saturday evening.
Rivera added five assists and two steals in 20 minutes to pace GW, which fell to 7-6 overall and 0-4 on the road this season. Freshman Tara Booker was the only other Colonial in double-figures with 10 points off the bench. Senior leading scorer Jessica Adair was GW's highest-scoring starter with nine points, all in the second half after playing just 16 minutes due to foul trouble.
No. 3/3 Texas A&M improved to a program-best 12-0 and matched a school-record with their 12th consecutive victory. The loss is the Colonials' first against the Aggies after knocking TAMU out of the 2007 NCAA Tournament second round and an overtime victory in Washington, DC, in Dec. 2007.
Senior Antelia Parrish had seven points and game-high 10 rebounds, but committed a career-high eight turnovers, along with senior Yolanda Lavender.
Turnovers once again plagued the Colonials, especially in the first half where 19 giveaways led to 22 points for the Aggies. GW held a commanding 30-14 edge in points in the paint, but the Aggies used solid jump-shooting, points off turnovers and 16 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds to combat the Colonials' presence in the lane.
Tanisha Smith hit consecutive three-pointers to open the game for the Aggies, who scored the first nine points of the contest. Jessica Adair picked up two fouls in the opening 3:55 and did not return the remainder of the first half.
Senior Jazmine Adair replaced her sister Jessica and converted a three-point play to get the Colonials on the scoreboard. A&M went up 14-3 before Jazmine connected on another three-point play to close to 14-6.
GW got within seven at 23-16 after a short A&M rally, but the Aggies finished the final 7:49 of the half on a 17-7 run to grab a 40-23 edge at the half.
In the second half, GW got as close as 11 at 44-33 on Jessica Adair's three-point play with 17:33 remaining, but Takia Starks scored eight of her game-high 22 points during a quick 10-2 spurt which gave Texas A&M a 54-35 lead.
The Colonials' deficit swelled to as many as 27 at 71-44 with less than six minutes to play and they wouldn't get any closer than 18 the rest of the way.
Danielle Gant and Smith followed Starks with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Gant added 10 rebounds, Starks had six steals and Sydney Colson chipped in eight points and six assists.
GW will seek its first road victory of the season when it wraps its three-game road stand at Rice Monday at 8:00 pm ET.
