Colonials Hold Off Second Half Charge By Rams, 67-53

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 7) - Senior forward Elena Vishniakova fell one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season, scoring a season-high 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds to lead the Colonials to a 67-53 victory over the Fordham Rams at Smith Center.

GW (7-6, 2-0) held a 12-point halftime lead, but was unable to get back into the offensive flow for the first five minutes of the second half. The Rams took advantage of the Colonials cold streak, outscoring GW 9-0 and pulling within three points with 15:17 left in the game.

The Colonials recovered and extended their lead behind the solid play of Vishniakova and freshman forward Anna Montaņana, who set a career high in points, pouring in 14 on 6-10 shooting. Montaņana was awarded the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week award on Jan 6, for her stellar play against La Salle on Jan 3, when she posted 10 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks in 27 minutes of play. She continued her hot streak, scoring 12 second-half points with Vishniakova adding 11 more, to increase GW's lead to as much as 17 points.

Junior guard Cathy Joens added 12 points and four assists and sophomore Ugo Oha scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the winning effort.

Fordham (3-10, 1-1) was led by sophomore guard Patty Williams who scored a game-high 19 points on 8-18 shooting.

The Colonials next travel to Ohio to face Dayton on Friday, Jan. 11, at 7:00 p.m. and Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 4:00 p.m. in a nationally televised game on espn2.
