Women's Basketball Rolls Over Dayton

DAYTON, OH (Jan. 11) - The Colonials shot a season-high 51% from the floor and five players scored in double-figures as GW remained undefeated in conference play, and recorded their first road victory of the season, topping the Dayton Flyers 80-57 at UD Arena.

Sophomore center Ugo Oha led five Colonials in double-figures with a game-high 20 points and collected eight rebounds on the evening. GW scored early and often, pulling away from the smaller UD players to a 23-11 lead with 10:11 left in the first half.

The Flyers responded with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to two points, 21-23, with six minutes remaining in the half. The Colonials struck back in the closing minutes, going on a 16-2 run of their own to finish the half and take a 39-23 lead into the locker room.

UD whittled away at GW's lead early in the second half behind a three-point barrage from junior guard Sarah Allen who made 6-11 three-point attempts on the game to lead the Flyers with 18 points. UD got as close as five points, 46-51, with 11:23 remaining in the game, when GW clamped down on defense, outscoring the Flyers 27-11 over the final ten minutes of play.

The Colonials forced the Flyers into 23 turnovers and converted them into 29 points while only turning over possession a season-low 14 times in the game.

Junior guard Lindsey Davidson regained her shooting touch, scoring a season-high 14 points in the winning effort on 5-7 shooting which included 4-5 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Cathy Joens continued to set the tone on offense, scoring 17 points and adding a season-high seven assists. Senior Elena Vishniakova poured in 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while junior Erica Lawrence added 10 points and eight rebounds.

 

 

GW (8-7, 3-0) will travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 13, in a 4:00 p.m. game. The contest will be aired nationally on espn2.
