GW 68
St. Joseph's 62

Post-Game Comments

St. Joseph's Coach Cindy Anderson-Griffin

"The game plan for us was to keep the game in the high 50s, low 60s. If we did that, we felt we could come away with the win. We let some things happen. [Cathy] Joens went off in the 2nd half, [Ugo] Oha went off in the 2nd half. We weren't able to counter as quickly."

"Oha never really got a clean catch in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, she was catching them clean. She's the type of kid that produces more when she does keep clean. That was the differnce. Stephanie [Graff] did a good job on her, but we just weren't able to contain her in the 2nd half."

GW Coach Joe McKeown

"It's a big weekend for us. Temple and St. Joe's are the two best teams in the A10-East. Both have played outstanding schedules. Temple's non-conference schedule was similar to ours. St. Joe's blew through preseason, and is playing with a lot of confidence. When you beat a team that was 14-2, that's really something."

"These are the games that you've got to grind. We played so well last Sunday against Xavier--we were up by 25, 27 points--you'd think at home we'd shoot better. But the other night we didn't shoot very well. Today, St. Joe's did pretty well defensively, and losing [Elena] Vishnikova takes away a lot of your offensive pop. I'm really happy the way we played this weekend against two very difficult teams."

[on Vishnikova's injury]
"I think it's pretty serious, the preliminary diagnosis is probably ACL. It's a shame because she was playing her best basketball of the year, and you really feel for her...It's hard to tell how it happened. Most ACLs happen with no contact. She probably just fell the wrong way...The doctors looked at her today. They'll do some more evaluations tomorrow, and probably Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll have a better idea. Maybe we'll get lucky."

[on Cathy Joens]
"I'll tell you why I'm a smart coach. I'm smart enough not to coach her. You can't, you just have to let her play. If you try to coach her, you take away her game. When you surf at Newport Beach and you have 50-foot waves coming at you, having some six-footer trying to wave at you doesn't bother you. She's fearless."

"There's an old Irish song called 'The 40 Shades of Green.' She's got the green light in all 40 shades. There's no yellow or red in her game."

[on SJU F Susan Moran scoring her 2000th career point]
"I've been in the league a long time. This is a tough league to do that kind of a milestone. Today we made her work, but I feel like she scored most of her 2,000 against us."

Sophomore Center Ugo Oha

"In the Temple game, we were a little tentative. Coach told us to come out and play hard, play strong, take it to them and be aggressive on offense."

[on how the non-conference prepared them for A10 play]
"Playing teams like NC State, Tennessee, going on the road to Pepperdine. That's the kind of schedule teams want to have. When you go to the Big Dance, you're ready. Playing teams like that is good for the rest of the year because they make us work harder."

Junior Forward Cathy Joens
"Temple and St. Joe's were the teams we needed to beat to be on top of our conference. With those two behind us, we can focus on playing the rest of the conference and not just winning, but playing well and preparing for the tournament."
