GW Skates By St. Bonaventure, 73-61
The Colonials make it four-in-a-row behind 22 from Joens.
Jan. 23, 2004
ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - George Washington had to battle a scrappy St. Bonaventure team to secure their 12th win of the season, 73-61, against only five losses, while improving to 5-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Colonials held an improving Bonnies team (5-12, 1-5) to 20 percent behind the three-point line, which was key considering SBU has gotten almost one-third of its points from beyond the arc. Senior Cathy Joens (Irvine, CA/Calvary Chapel) again led the Colonials in scoring with 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. The Bonnies were led by Tory Vyborny, who had 14 points and eight rebounds.
St. Bonaventure jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Colonials battled back to take a 33-32 lead at the break. A 15-3 run early in the second half broke the game open, but the Bonnies cut the lead to one with 6:29 left. GW responded and scored 15 of the next 17 points to secure the 12-point victory.
Junior Anna Monta?ana (Valencia, Spain/St. Maria El Pilar) had, what is turning into, a standard performance with 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to go along with three steals. Ugo Oha (Houston, TX/Hastings) had another strong outing with 18 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
GW held St. Bonaventure to 37 percent shooting on the night (24-65), while the Colonials shot fairly well at 43 percent (27-63). The Colonails outrebounded their fourth-straight opponent, 43-38, which may have something to do with their four-game winning streak.
The Colonials will look to match their longest winning streak of the season when they take on Duquesne on Thursday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Smith Center.
