Jan. 30, 2010
PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington sophomore Tiana Myers' team-high 17 points were offset by a game-high 23 points from Saint Joseph's reserve Brittany Ford as the Hawks pulled away in the second half for a 63-47 victory over the Colonials in the teams' 50th all-time meeting Saturday afternoon.
Myers converted 8-of-16 shots to pace GW (5-15, 2-5 A-10) with 17 points, but the rest of the team shot just 10-of-38 from the field. Sophomore Sara Mostafa added 11 points and game-high eight rebounds for the Colonials, who lost for the first time in three games.
GW fell to 24-26 all-time against Saint Joseph's, the only A-10 series in which the Colonials do not own an edge.
Trailing 27-22 at halftime, GW briefly took a one-point lead just over two minutes into the second half, but the Hawks closed the game with a 34-17 run behind Ford's 19 second-half points. SJU (11-10, 4-2 A-10) shot 13-of-24 from the field (54.2 percent) in the second half, sparked by Ford's perfect 9-for-9 effort, while GW went 9-for-28 (32.1 percent) over the final 20 minutes.
Back-to-back three-point possessions - a three pointer from freshman Megan Nipe and three-point play from Mostafa - sparked an 8-2 run as GW regained the lead, 30-29, just over two minutes into the second half. That lead was shortlived as Ford scored 15 of her 23 points during a 26-8 spurt which gave the Hawks their largest lead, 55-38, with 5:24 left.
Myers hit a three pointer at the 3:22 mark to close to 57-45, but the Colonials missed their final three shots and wouldn't get any closer.
Amy Gillespie finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks, who won for the eighth time in their last 11 games.
Both teams struggled at the outset with the Hawks missing their first eight shots and the Colonials turning the ball over on six of their opening nine possessions. GW maintained a small cushion and led 14-12, but SJU used a 15-8 run the final 8:21 of the first half to lead 27-22 at the break. The Colonials missed their final seven shots of the period and had 10 first-half turnovers.
