Colonials Crush Explorers, 87-61

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 3) - Cathy Joens celebrated her third Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award by scoring 17 points in only 24 minutes play as George Washington cruised to their tenth-straight victory to remain undefeated in the conference, topping the La Salle Explorers, 87-61.

The Colonials never trailed in the game, and sprinted out to an 11-point lead within the first four minutes. LU clawed their way back into the game and narrowed the gap to three points twice in the half, but GW used a 12-5 run to close out the first half and extend their lead to 11 points at the break, 41-30.

The Colonials clamped down in the second half on defense, and never allowed the Explorers within single-digits and held them to 36 percent from the floor (12-33). GW also stepped their offense up another notch, scorching the nets at a 62 percent clip (16-26).

GW cleared the bench with a 21-point lead and nine minutes left in the contest, allowing the reserves to get some valuable playing time. They responded admirably, and pulled away from LU for a game-high 28-point lead.

Five Colonials finished the game in double figures and every player scored in a solid all-around effort. In addition to Joens, sophomore center Ugo Oha scored 14 points and freshman Anna Montaņana added 13 in the winning effort. Sophomore Valerie Williams and freshman Greeba Outen Barlow came off the bench to score 10 and 12 points respectively. Barlow's 12 points set a new career-high for the Columbia, MD native.

GW (15-6, 10-0) return home to host Duquesne on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:00 p.m. at Smith Center.
