WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team held an early 6-2 lead, but No. 7/7 Xavier asserted its dominance in the paint and beyond the arc during a 46-18 run to close the first half en route to defeating the Colonials, 72-56, at Charles E. Smith Center Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Tiana Myers scored 18 points to match Xavier leading scorer Amber Harris' 18 points. Sophomore Sara Mostafa added 12 and freshman Shi-Heria Shipp chipped in 10 in her second collegiate start. The Colonials were playing with seven available players as sophomore Kay-Kay Allums was suspended indefinitely earlier this week for violating team rules.
Ta'Shia Phillips recorded a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to follow Harris' 18-point, 7-rebound effort for Xavier, which won its eighth straight game and has earned its highest ranking in school history. Tyeasha Moss hit four 3-pointers in the first half and added 14 points, while Katie Rutan knocked down three triples and finished with 10 despite playing just 13 minutes after leaving the game due to injury in the second half.
GW (5-16, 2-6 A-10) grabbed the early four-point advantage behind a layup from Shipp and back-to-back jump shots from Mostafa four minutes into the contest.
Moss answered with three pointers on three of Xavier's next four possessions to ignite a 25-4 spurt and dash any chance the Colonials had at an upset. The Musketeers hit five 3-pointers during that run and finished 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first period to open a commanding 48-24 lead at halftime.
After missing 3-of-4 shots to open the game, Xavier (17-3, 7-0 A-10) converted 19 of its final 27 field goals to end the half at a blistering 64.5 percent. The Musketeers also shot 12-of-16 inside the arc and scored 24 of their 38 points in the paint over the opening 20 minutes.
The Colonials' deficit maxed out at 66-35 with 8:44 remaining. Myers scored 10 of her game-high 18 points over the final 6:40, while Mostafa netted half of her 12 during the final 8:24 as GW outscored Xavier, 32-24, in the second half and closed to within the 16-point final margin.
Freshman Megan Nipe finished with nine points and career-high nine rebounds for the Colonials, who lost for just the second time in 13 home meetings against the Musketeers.
The Colonials travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to face Duquesne Saturday at 12:00 pm. That game will air live on CBS College Sports.
