GW Streak Halted at Six With 55-49 Loss to Richmond
Feb. 4, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Yolanda Lavender scored a game-high 15 points and George Washington closed within five points with 19 seconds to play, but Richmond staved off a late rally to snap the Colonials' six-game winning streak, 55-49, Wednesday night at Charles E. Smith Center. GW falls to 13-9 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10, with both league losses coming against Richmond (17-6, 5-3 A-10). It marks the first time the Spiders have won both meetings in the annual regular-season home-and-home series since their move to the A-10 for the 2001-02 season. Lavender was 3-of-12 from the floor, but hit all nine foul shots en route to the season-high 15 points. Freshman Tara Booker narrowly missed her first career double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jessica Adair added nine points and seven boards, while senior Antelia Parrish chipped in seven points and a game-high four assists. The Colonials never led and fell behind by as many as 13 in the second half as they struggled with 2-for-17 shooting from the field to begin the second half. Trailing 26-21 with 18:36 remaining, GW hit just one field goal the next 12 and half minutes, but managed to move its deficit to eight, 42-34, when sophomore Erica Rivera scored on a transition jumper with 6:04 to play. Johanna McKnight converted a three-point play - her lone field goal - and Crystal Goring broke loose in the lane to boost the Spiders' lead back to 12 at 48-36 at the 4:13 mark. Richmond still led by 11 with 1:30 remaining when Booker and Parrish hit three's around a Lavender mid-range jumper to pull within 54-49 with 19 second to play. Danielle Bell made 1-of-2 free throws and Booker and freshman Tiana Myers each missed from deep on the final possession.
GW posted its second-worst shooting effort of the season at 30.2 percent on 16-of-53 shooting. The Colonials shot 28.6 percent on 14-of-49 shooting in a November loss at Kentucky. GW also committed 22 turnovers, offsetting a season-high-tying 12 steals. Goring and Abby Oliver each scored 10 points to pace the Spiders, who shot 17-of-47 from the floor (36 percent), including 2-of-15 from behind the arc. GW hosts Rhode Island at Smith Center Sunday at 2:00 pm. |
