No. 21/19 Xavier's 14 Threes Turn Lights Out on GW, 82-62
Feb. 11, 2009
CINCINNATI, OH - Freshman Tiana Myers led George Washington with a career-high 14 points, but No. 21/19 Xavier literally shot the lights out to defeat the Colonials, 82-62, Wednesday night. The Musketeers hit 14 three-pointers in a game that featured a 20-minute delay due to a power outage in Cintas Center. GW (14-10, 6-3 A-10) led 19-15 with 10:57 left in the first half, but Atlantic 10-leader Xavier (21-4, 9-0 A-10) ended the half on a 28-11 run to lead by 12 at halftime and never trailed by fewer than 10 points the rest of the night. Myers added four assists and four rebounds to her career night, followed by 11 points and seven boards from senior Jessica Adair and 11 points off the bench from sophomore Erica Rivera. Jerri Taylor and Tudy Reed each hit four 3-pointers and finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Ta'Shia Phillips matched Taylor with a game-high 17 points. April Phillips added a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double. GW was just the third opponent to shoot 40 percent (26-of-65, 40.0%) against Xavier this season, but the hosts shot a blistering 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the floor, including 14-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Musketeers assisted on 26 of their 30 baskets and doubled-up the Colonials on the glass, 42-26. At 8:02 pm and with 19:15 remaining, the Cintas Center lights went out, likely caused by severe thunderstorms in the Cincinnati area, and caused a 20-minute delay. Senior Antelia Parrish hit a three-pointer out of the stoppage to pull GW within 45-35 with 18:54 to play, but XU went on a 9-2 run to go back ahead by 17, 54-37. The Colonials again tried to rally and closed to 62-50 on a driving layup by senior Yolanda Lavender with 9:22 left. However, the Musketeers continued to hit from long range and expanded the margin to its largest of the game, 82-58, following a trio of triples in the final minutes.
GW shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from the field in the first half - the fourth-best single-half effort against Xavier this season - but surrendered seven first-half 3-pointers and 12 points each from Reed and Ta'Shia Phillips to trail 44-32 at the break. The Musketeers shot 58.6 percent from the floor, including 7-of-9 from deep, and closed the final 10:46 of the first half with a 28-11 run after the Colonials grabbed a 19-15 lead. Myers and Rivera had seven points to lead GW in the opening period. GW wraps its two-game road swing Saturday at Saint Louis. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm ET. |
