Women's Basketball Wins 14th Straight

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 17, 2002) - George Washington women's basketball rode a 13-2 run in the second half to a 61-58 victory over the visiting Xavier Musketeers at Smith Center.

The Colonials (19-6, 14-0) took control of the game early in the first half, opening up a 21-13 lead with seven minutes left before the break on a 13-4 run. However, the Musketeers went on a run of their own, as Amy Waugh scored eight of her game-high 25 points and XU outscored GW 14-2 over a four-minute span to take the lead 27-23 with 3:30 remaining in the half. The Musketeers extended their lead in the closing minutes of the half, taking a 39-31 lead into the locker room.

The Colonials clamped down on defense in the second half, holding the Musketeers to just five field goals (5-26) and 19.2 percent shooting, and forcing XU into 12 second-half turnovers. GW chipped away at XU's lead over the course of the half, finally seizing the lead at the 5:08 mark, 52-51 off a Cathy Joens jumper.

GW would never relinquish the lead again, outscoring 9-7 over the final five minutes. XU made a final run at the Colonials a cutting their lead in half when Waugh hit a three-point shot with 1:30 remaining. Waugh then converted one of two free throws to pull the Musketeers within two points, 59-57 with 24 seconds remaining on the clock. However, Erica Lawrence would make two clutch free throws five seconds later to extend GW's lead. Time would run out on the Musketeers as a free throw attempt bounced off the iron with 1.2 seconds remaining, giving GW the 61-58 victory.

XU (9-17, 4-10) was led by Waugh who scored 25 points on 8-17 shooting, including 5-13 from beyond the arc.

GW was led by Ugo Oha who recorded her third double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 24 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Joens threw in 16 points and grabbed seven boards in 29 minutes of play.

 

 

The Colonials return to action on Friday, Feb. 22, in Kingston, RI as they travel to face the Rhode Island Rams.
