Ayahna Cornish scored 18 points to lead E #5 Saint Joseph's past W #4 LaSalle, 56-50, in the opening game of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Smith Center in Washington, DC. Cornish shot 5-of-17 from the floor and was 8-of-9 from the free-thow line. Erica Pollock pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the Hawks.
La Salle overcame a 10-point second half deficit to pull within two on three occasions with less than four minutes to play, but couldn't overtake Saint Joseph's. Crista Ricketts led the Explorers with 14 points and Davineia Payne and Jill Marano finished with 10 points each.
Saint Joseph's will play E #1 Temple in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 5
at 12:00 p.m.
