DENTON, TX - Sophomore Sara Mostafa finished two blocks shy of a triple-double, but it was freshman Shi-Heria Shipp who provided the late heroics with a tip-in with 3.3 seconds left to lift the George Washington women's basketball team to an 84-82 season-opening victory at North Texas Tuesday evening.
GW (1-0) trailed 67-56 with 8:52 remaining, but stormed back behind Mostafa, who scored all 17 of her points in the second half, to pull off the come-from-behind victory.
Mostafa finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks to narrowly miss the program's third-ever triple double. Freshman Danni Jackson added 12 points and seven assists, followed by 11 points each from rookies Shipp and Megan Nipe.
The Colonials, who had six players seeing their first collegiate action, grabbed just their third lead of the game at 78-77 on Brooke Wilson's put-back with 1:53 remaining. After UNT tied with a free throw, both teams traded the lead on free throws from GW's Jackson and UNT's Niq'ky Hughes to make it 80-80 with 1:03 left.
Mostafa scored off her own miss with 30 seconds to play to give GW a two-point edge, but Jasmine Godbolt knotted the game again with 15 ticks on the clock.
The Colonials elected not to call timeout and Jackson set-up a high screen at the top of the key. Her running drive missed off the backboard, but Shipp crashed the weak side for the game-winning tip-in with 3.3 seconds to play.
Godbolt converted a lay-up off a long three-point attempt as time expired, but the shot was waived off after a short official review.
GW finished 35-of-77 (45.5 percent) from the field, including 21-of-37 (56.8 percent) in the second half, and held a 44-41 edge on the boards despite trailing 25-22 in the first half.
