WASHINGTON, DC - Sophomore Tiana Myers scored a career-high 18 points and classmate Sara Mostafa added 14 as the George Washington women's basketball team posted a 68-64 victory over Coppin State in its debut at newly renovated Charles E. Smith Center Thursday night.
After staging a late-game rally to defeat North Texas in its season opener on Tuesday, GW (2-0) overcame a late charge from Coppin State (2-1) to capture its home opener for the fourth straight season.
The teams traded the lead six times over the final 10 minutes, with the Colonials securing the victory on jumpers from freshman Megan Nipe and Mostafa with less than 90 seconds to play after trailing by one, 64-63, at the 2:30 mark.
Freshman Danni Jackson scored nine points and dished out eight assists, including the setup on Mostafa's clinching jumper with 24 seconds remaining, while committing just one turnover. Sophomore Tara Booker chipped in eight points, eight boards and career-high five steals off the bench.
GW built a 14-point lead in the first half by limiting CSU to 33.3 percent shooting, but the Eagles converted five three-pointers in the second half and led by four, 57-53, with 7:08 left. The Colonials managed to tie it at 57-57, but neither team pulled away until Nipe's baseline 15-footer with 1:23 remaining gave the hosts the lead for good.
Shante Cummings hit five three-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points for Coppin State, followed by 16 points from Jeanine Manley.
The Colonials outscored the Eagles, 18-0, in fast-break points, and finished 24-of-53 from the floor (45.3%).
GW embarks on a five-game road swing beginning Sunday at Ohio University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
