BOWLING GREEN, KY - Senior Antelia Parrish's three-pointer with 2:37 remaining moved the George Washington women's basketball team to within 64-60, but Western Kentucky answered with six straight points and went on to defeat the Colonials, 72-64, at E.A. Diddle Arena Friday night.
Playing its first road game of the season, GW (2-1) couldn't find answer for WKU's Kenzie Rich, who finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Rich was one of four WKU (2-1) players in double figures.
Parrish and senior Jessica Adair led GW's four double-digit scorers with 13 points apiece, followed by 12 from twin Jazmine Adair and 11 from freshman Tara Booker. Booker led a Colonials' bench that scored 29 points, but the Lady Toppers countered with 22 points off 17 turnovers.
After being tied at 32-32 at the half, GW (2-1) took a brief two-point lead just over two minutes into the second half. WKU (2-1) forced the game's seventh tie 11 seconds later, regained the lead for good with 16:30 remaining and withstood several comeback attempts by the Colonials the remainder of the contest.
Dominique Duck scored seven straight points, capped by a late-in-the-shot-clock three, to give the hosts their largest lead at 54-44 midway through the period.
Booker's third three of the game jumpstarted a 9-2 run that pulled the Colonials within three, 56-53, with 6:46 left to play. The Lady Toppers steadily built their lead back to seven until Parrish's three from the left wing sliced the deficit to 64-60 at the 2:37 mark.
However, leading scorer Rich got free for a back-door lay-in, Amy McNear hit a fadeaway jumper and Rich converted a steal in a span of 52 seconds to thwart the Colonials rally.
