Joens Lifts Colonials Over Rutgers In Overtime Thriller, 58-54

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (Dec. 12) - The Colonials won a physical battle versus the Rutgers Scarlet Knights tonight in overtime, 58-54. Junior guard Cathy Joens led GW with 25 points on 8-14 shooting, hitting 7-11 from three-point range.

Joens keyed the Colonial offense, hitting clutch shots to keep pace with the Scarlet Knights. GW trailed by a slim margin for a majority of the game, seizing the lead five times throughout the contest. Joens hit the four of the five shots for the Colonials that resulted in a GW lead, including her only two-point field goal of the night, an overtime lay-up that gave the Colonials the lead for good.

With the Colonials trailing by four points with 1:17 left in overtime, Joens hit a three point shot to pull within one. Junior guard Lindsey Davidson pulled in a rebound off a missed three-point attempt by RU's Dawn McCullouch, and fed it to a streaking Joens who converted an acrobatic lay-up and drew a foul with :35 seconds left in the game.

McCullouch led the Scarlet Knights with 17 points on 7-19 shooting. RU senior Davalyn Cunningham had 16 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.

Senior forward Elena Vishniakova was the only other Colonial in double figures with 13 points. Vishniakova, who has been recovering from a recent back injury, did not make the start, but played 31 physical minutes, collecting eight rebounds in the contest. Junior forward Erica Lawrence chipped in eight points, and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds.

GW (4-4) next faces local rival George Mason at the GMU Patriot Center on Dec. 20, at 7:00 p.m.
