Adair, Abiona Double-Doubles Power GW Past Loyola (MD), 53-35

Dec. 27, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Jessica Adair and redshirt sophomore Ivy Abiona both recorded double-doubles and the George Washington defense limited Loyola (MD) to 24 percent shooting en route to a 53-35 victory at Charles E. Smith Center Saturday afternoon.

Adair led all scorers with 13 points and added 12 rebounds to post her first double-double of the season and 13th of her career. Adair also had four blocks and matched a career-high with three assists. Abiona chipped in a career-high 10 points and 12 boards for her first career double-double. Freshman Tiana Myers and senior Yolanda Lavender also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

GW (7-4) led throughout the game, but couldn't pull away from Loyola (7-5), which closed within 36-32 on a Siobhan Prior three-pointer with 7:18 remaining.

The Colonials ended the game with a 17-3 run, holding the Greyhounds to one field goal the rest of the way to improve to 12-0 all-time against the Baltimore school. Adair, Abiona, Lavender and Myers accounted for all 17 points during the run, highlighted by Adair's three-point play with 1:55 left.

GW surged to a double-digit advantage just over seven minutes into the contest and led 23-13 with 2:16 left in the first half. Loyola narrowed the margin to 24-17 at the half and moved within a point, 24-23, on consecutive three-pointers to begin the second half. The lead remained in single digits until the Colonials' late surge.

Prior paced the Greyhounds, who shot just 23.7 percent overall and 20.7 percent in the second half, with 12 points on 5-of-21 shooting. Kaitlin Grant grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, but the larger Colonials held an overwhelming 55-31 edge on the boards and 22-8 advantage in points in the paint.

GW begins a difficult three-game road stretch Monday at nationally ranked Rutgers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
