Dec. 28, 2010
CORAL GABLES, FL - After having its travel plans affected by snow in the Northeast, the George Washington women's basketball team ran into the Hurricanes in south Florida in an 83-62 loss to the University of Miami in the opening game of the Miami Holiday Classic at BankUnited Center Tuesday night.
GW (5-7) lost its third straight game despite holding Miami (12-1) to its second fewest points in an opening half this season, trailing 38-31 at intermission. The high-scoring Hurricanes, who won their 11th straight game, shot nearly 54 percent in the second half finish just below their 84.8 point average.
The Colonials trailed by just seven points, 43-36, with 18:21 remaining in the contest, but the Hurricanes went on a 20-6 run over the next seven minutes to build a 21-point advantage, 63-42. GW would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way.
The Colonials arrived in Florida a day later than expected after having their Sunday night flight cancelled due to the snow and inclement weather throughout the Northeast. The team took six separate flights Monday morning and afternoon before practicing in Coral Gables later that evening.
Junior Sara Mostafa was the lone Colonials players in double figures with 11 points and added six rebounds and two blocks. Juniors Tara Booker and Tiana Myers and sophomore Danni Jackson each pitched in nine points, with Booker adding a game-high seven rebounds.
Five players reached double figures for UM, led by Shenise Johnson's 19 points - 17 of which came in the first half. Riquna Williams scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, Krystal Saunders chipped in 14 and Morgan Stroman and Stefanie Yderstrom added 10 apiece.
GW matched Miami on the boards, 39-39, and knocked down a season-high eight three-pointers, led by three from both Booker and Myers. However, the Colonials allowed a season-worst 11 triples, including eight in the second half, and the Hurricanes turned 15 steals into 25 points off turnovers and 11 fast-break points.
The Colonials complete their play in the Miami Holiday Classic tomorrow night against Morgan State. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
