Former Standout Whitney Allen Named Finnish League Player of the Month

Feb. 5, 2009

ESPOO, FINLAND - Former George Washington women's basketball standout Whitney Allen was named the Finland D1 League Player of the Month for January on Tuesday after leading her team, Espoo, to a pair of victories and into second place in the standings.

Allen averaged 23.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 5.5 steals, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists in wins over Forssan Alku (81-64) and BC Nokia (106-44), which helped Espoo climb to 13-4 overall and into second place in the D1 League standings.

A two-time Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team selection, Allen has started every game this season for Espoo, averaging 14.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. She ranks seventh in the league in blocks (0.9 bpg) and is ninth in steals (2.8 spg).

Two-time honorable mention All-American Kimberly Beck also is competing overseas with Ceyhan of the Turkish BBL, a league which includes top talent from the WNBA. Beck, who joined the team in January, has played in three games for Ceyhan, including an upset of rival Galatasaray to improve to 6-7 overall.

Allen and Beck helped guide GW to 101 victories, four A-10 regular-season titles, four NCAA Tournaments and a pair of Sweet 16 appearances during their careers from 2004-08.
