Cole, Lawrence Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

Feb. 8, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's basketball senior Kenan Cole and junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence have been selected to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District II First Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Cole, a mechanical engineering major, and Lawrence, a communications and sociology major, now join 42 other first-team selections from eight districts around the country on the national ballot and could become the first GW women's basketball players to receive the national award since Jennifer Shasky in 1993. Cole was tabbed a second team Academic All-District scholar-athlete in 2005 and was an Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference pick last year.

Cole and Lawrence have started all 21 games for the Colonials this season and rank third (11.8 ppg) and second (12.7 ppg), respectively, on the team in scoring. Cole is the league leader in free throw percentage (.917) and ranks second on the team with 27 three-pointers and third in rebounds (108) and assists (48). Lawrence is ranked in the top 17 in the A-10 in five categories, including tied for sixth place with Kimberly Beck in steals (41). Lawrence was named to the All-Tournament team at the BTI Classic in November and Surf `N Slam Hoop Classic in December.

Cole and Lawrence were joined by Maryland's Shay Doron and Crystal Langhorne and Villanova's Jackie Adamshick on the District II first team.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. CoSIDA District II is comprised of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
