Feb. 12, 2006
ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - The Colonials (16-6, 9-2) complete this weekend's road trip with a noon-time tip at St. Bonaventure (2-9, 8-14) on Sunday. The Colonials enter the game having won their previous two A-10 contests including a 38-point victory at home against Saint Louis. The Bonnies have lost their last three and won last against Saint Louis, a team they are tied with for last place in the A-10. GW is in a tie with No. 19 Temple for second place in the Atlantic 10 and currently holds the tie-breaker having beaten them earlier this season. GW has won 14 of its last 17 games, with a 10-game home winning streak.
In the 30 previous meeting between the Colonials and the Bonnies, GW has won all but one game. Since that lone loss at Reilly Center in 1989, GW has run-off 24-straight victories. GW is 13-1 all-time at St. Bonaventure and a perfect 14-0 at home. GW is also 2-0 in A-10 Tournament games and has the same edge at neutral sites. In last year's only meeting, GW won, 97-42 at Smith Center.
GW started this road trip in a hole, when it went down by 13 at Duquesne. The Colonials were resilient and fought back for their largest comeback of the season and the only time they have won when down at halftime. Even though the Colonials were beaten in several categories, they won by seven points thanks in large part to Kimberly Beck's four second-half three pointers. Jessica Simmonds had a game-high 15 points after failing to reach 10 points in the previous five games. Kenan Cole has emerged as GW's highest and most consistent scorer in A-10 play. She has scored in double digits in eight of GW's 11 conference games.
Weather-willing, GW will return to campus on Sunday night and play their next two games at home, where they are enjoying a 10-game home winning streak. The Colonials face La Salle on Friday at 7:00 p.m. followed by an A-10 TV game against Richmond at noon on Sunday. GW then goes head-to-head with No. 19 Temple, which is tied for the second spot in the Atlantic 10 with the Colonials. GW concludes the regular season with its first-ever meeting with Charlotte. Charlotte has been in first place in the A-10 since GW stumbled at Massachusetts, its last loss. Even if the Colonials were at their current one-game deficit behind the league-leader going into the game, they could emerge as regular season champions by way of the head-to-head tie-breaker with a GW win.
