NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington freshman forward Caira Washington was named Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced on Monday. The award covers games played Feb. 10-16.
Washington led GW to wins over VCU and Massachusetts with team highs of 19.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game, shooting 73.9 percent from the floor (17-23).
Washington recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Colonials' 80-62 win over VCU on Thursday, making 7-of-9 field goals and adding four blocks and two assists. She followed up with a career day against UMass on Saturday, posting her team-best ninth double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds, including six offensive boards. She made 10-of-14 shots in the victory over the Minutewomen as the Colonials improved to 9-4 in A-10 play and moved into a tie for third place in the league standings.
For the season, the rookie from Brandywine, Md., is averaging 11.9 points and 9.2 rebounds, leading the A-10 in both rebounding, field goal percentage (.570) and offensive rebounds (3.8 rpg) while ranking fourth in blocks (1.2 bpg).
Washington was previously named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 16 and Jan. 6. She is the first Colonial to win three Rookie of the Week awards since Kimberly Beck won it six times in 2004-05.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they visit A-10 rival Richmond for a 12 p.m. tipoff.
