GW Women's Basketball Earns Seven Atlantic 10 Honors

March 1, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington Colonials women's basketball team earned seven All-Conference honors recognizing five different players the Atlantic 10 has announced. The Colonials (20-7, 13-3) are the A-10 Regular Season Co-Champions and earned a first round bye as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, which will be played at Saint Joseph's this weekend. The Colonials open A-10 tournament play at noon on Saturday when they take on the winner of No. 8 seed La Salle (11-16, 7-9) and No. 9 seed Richmond (12-16, 7-9). GW has at least a piece of the regular season title for the fifth-straight season and it is GW's seventh-straight 20-win season and 15th in the last 16 years.

The same two Colonials who earned Preseason All-Conference honors were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First-Team. Senior forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) and sophomore guard Kimberly Beck (Fairburn, GA/Woodward Academy) were both named to the team with Beck the only sophomore on the list. Beck was also honored as a member of the five-person All-Defensive Team where she is also the only underclassman to be so honored.

Sophomore guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence (Rhoadesville, VA/Orange County), who leads GW in scoring, was named Atlantic 10 Sixth Player of the Year. She also garnered an Honorable Mention in the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team voting. Lawrence leads the team with 11.4 points per game despite coming off the bench in most of GW's 27 regular season games. She led the Colonials with 21 points in their overtime victory at then-No. 17 Temple en route to earning the top seed in the A-10 Championship.

Junior guard Kenan Cole (Rocky Ridge, MD/St. John's at Prospect Hall) was one of five players named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Academic Team. With a 3.96 in Mechanical Engineering, she has been on the GW Athletic Department Dean's List and School of Engineering & Applied Science Dean's Honor List every semester. On the court, Cole has been GW's leading scorer in A-10 play.

Freshman center Jazmine Adair (Washington, DC/Anacostia) was named to the five-member Atlantic 10 All-Conference Rookie Team. Adair was named A-10 Rookie of the Week when she earned her first double-double with 11 points and rebounds in GW's home win versus then-No. 19 Temple. She earned her second double-double versus La Salle with 12 points and rebounds, a career-high in both categories.
