A-10 Championship Central

CINCINNATI, OH - The No. 8/9 George Washington women's basketball team begins its quest for the program's fifth Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament championship on Saturday at Xavier's Cintas Center in Cincinnati, OH. The top-seeded Colonials will play 9-seed Dayton, a 57-43 first-round victor over 8-seed La Salle on Friday, in a quarterfinal game on Saturday at 12:00 pm.

No. 8/9 GW (25-2) enters its 25th A-10 Championship as the No. 1-seed for a league-record 11th time. The Colonials have won four A-10 Tournament crowns, the most recent coming in 2003, and boast a 30-20 overall record in the event. GW has failed to reach the semifinals just once in the last 15 years.

GW is coming off a pair of wins last weekend that clinched the second undefeated (14-0) league season in program history and just the fifth in A-10 annals. Junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence averaged 17.5 points as the Colonials trounced Saint Joseph's 87-60 last Friday and knocked off previous league unbeaten Temple 56-53 on Sunday.

Those victories ran GW's current winning streak to 18 games, the fourth longest in the nation and second longest in program history. With three wins and a conference crown this weekend, the Colonials can tie the school-record for wins in a season of 28 set during 1996-97 (28-6).

2007 A-10 Coach of the Year Joe McKeown leads five all-conference team members into action. Junior Kimberly Beck was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, as well as First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive. Sophomore Jessica Adair joined Beck on the first team, while junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence captured second team honors and senior Kenan Cole was placed on the third team along with All-Academic. Junior Whitney Allen landed on the All-Defensive Team.

CSTV will televise Sunday's semifinal games, but altered the game times to accomodate its programming schedule. Sunday's first semifinal, in which GW would play, will tip at 12:00 pm, while the second semifinal will jump at 2:30 pm. Monday's final will be televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 pm.
