WASHINGTON, DC - The No. 14/13 George Washington women's basketball team (26-3) was awarded a five-seed in the Dallas Bracket and will face 12th-seeded Boise State (24-8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, CA, on Saturday, March 17. Tip-off is approximately 4:45 pm EDT.
GW, which is making its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 14th overall, is 14-13 in 27 tourney games. The Colonials are 11-2 in first-round games, including an 87-72 victory at 10th-seeded Old Dominion last March.
The Los Angeles sub-regional is comprised of fourth-seeded Texas A&M and 13th-seeded Texas-Arlington.
The winner of the GW-Boise State game will meet the winner of the Texas A&M-Texas-Arlington game in the second round on Monday in Los Angeles. GW has never faced either the Broncos, Aggies or Mavericks.
Boise State secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of its WAC Tournament title. The Broncos have won five straight games, including a 49-46 decision over New Mexico State, Joe McKeown's former employer, in Las Cruces, NM, on March 10. Jessica Thompson is the team's leading scorer at 14.1 ppg, while Rebecca Kepilino paces the squad in rebounds at 6.1 rpg.
GW wrapped up its best regular season on record at the Atlantic 10 Championship on March 4. Despite a 57-55 loss to Saint Joseph's in the semifinals of the conference tournament, the Colonials finished the season at 26-3, the best regular-season mark in terms of winning percentage in program history. GW was also ranked in the Top 10 for four weeks and has been in both national polls for 17 consecutive weeks, equaling the longest stretch in program history.
The Colonials are enjoying their best season since 1997, when they finished with a school-record 28 victories (28-6) and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed. Two years prior, in 1995, GW entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed, the highest seed the program has been awarded in 14 appearances.
