WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's Cathy Joens received the Edward S. Steitz award as the nation's top female three-point shooter. The award, given by the Basketball Hall of Fame and the City of Springfield's (MA) Tip-Off Classic Committee, is presented in the memory of the longtime Springfield College athletic director and coach who, as Editor and Interpreter of Basketball Rules, originated the three point field goal for colleges.
Joens is the most prolific three-point shooter in GW history, holding the school record with 286 career threes. She shot 44 percent (96-218) from behind the arc this season and ranked fourth nationally with 3.37 three-point field goals made per game. Joens also holds the school record with eight three-pointers in one game, which she set against Richmond earlier this season.
It was a big day for Cathy Joens as she also finished third in the 16th Annual Mountain Dew College Basketball Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championships as seen on ESPN. Joens faced off with some of the nation's top long-range bombers including Courtney Davidson (Navy), Beth Jones (Purdue), Chandi Jones (Houston), Kelly Mazzante (Penn St.), Vicki Krapohl (Duke), Amber Jacobs (Boston College) and Kim MacMillan (St. John's).
