UNCASVILLE, CT - George Washington senior Anna Montañana signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Tuesday, April 19. She will be one of several players competing for a spot on the team's 2005 roster.
The Sun open their preseason schedule with Minnesota on May 1 and will also play preseason contests against Charlotte, Houston and Minnesota before opening the regular season at Detroit on May 21.
Montañana finished third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring average in 2004-05 at 16.7 points per game. She also contributed 6.8 rebounds per outing on her way to earning all-conference first-team honors for the second straight season. The 6-1 forward capped the year by earning WBCA/Kodak Region I All-America honors and being selected as a WBCA/Kodak Honorable Mention All-American.
Two other former Colonials will join Montañana in WNBA training camps this spring. Cathy Joens and Ugo Oha, both 2004 graduates of GW, have also signed training camp contracts. Joens, a two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, was inked by the Washington Mystics after spending the year with CB Puig d'en Valls of the Spanish Premiere League. Oha, a two-time A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, signed with the San Antonio Silver Stars after playing for Ashdod of the Israeli Premiere League last season.
