WASHINGTON, DC - Former George Washington women's basketball standout Sarah-Jo Lawrence '08 was one of three finalists for Diverse: Issues in Higher Education's 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Top Female Scholar Athlete, the award-winning publication announced on May 29. Lawrence was also selected to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars First Team for women's basketball for the second consecutive season.
Lawrence, along with UMBC women's soccer player Jessica Young, finished runner-up to Illinois' women's tennis star Momei Qu for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Top Female Scholar Athlete Award. The trio of finalists were chosen from a total of over 600 female and male nominees.
Diverse magazine established the Sports Scholar Awards in 1992 to honor the legendary Arthur Ashe Jr. and his commitment to social justice, education and sports. Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are outstanding undergraduate students of color who have achieved athletically and academically. The honorees embody the spirit, values and commitment that are Arthur Ashe's legacy.
To be nominated, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses and/or in their communities.
As a four-year letterwinner for the women's basketball team, Lawrence helped the Colonials to 101 victories, four Atlantic 10 regular-season titles, four NCAA Tournaments and back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances the last two seasons. She finished her career ranked 13th on GW's scoring list with 1,373 points in a school-record-tying 130 career games. She was the A-10 Sixth Player of the Year and honorable mention All-Conference as a sophomore after leading the Colonials in scoring as a substitute. In 2007, she was named second team All-Conference and followed up with third team All-Conference honors this season.
A double major in communications and sociology with a 3.85 GPA, Lawrence was this year's A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball and earned third team Academic All-America status from ESPN The Magazine. She was one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes the nation's top women's basketball student-athletes, and was one of two recipients from all levels of college basketball to receive the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Scholarship.
