WASHINGTON, DC - Former George Washington standout, Tajama Abraham, has been hired as an assistant women's basketball coach, head coach Joe McKeown announced on Friday, June 4. Abraham, now known as Tajama Ngongba after marrying former GW player Patrick Ngongba, joins the Colonials' staff after a one-year stint at Virginia Commonwealth University.
"Obviously, we are very excited to have Tajama back with our program," said McKeown. "She was a Kodak All-American and a professional in both Europe and the WNBA. She brings excellent basketball knowledge and a great personality to our staff."
Ngongba began her coaching career in Foggy Bottom as the administrative assistant from 1999-2001. She also spent some of that time as an assistant coach with the U.S. Virgin Islands Women's Junior National Team. From there, Ngongba spent one year at the University of Richmond before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth.
Ngongba also made a name for herself as a player both at GW and professionally. She is GW's all-time leading scorer and up until last season, the school's all-time leading shot blocker. Her strong inside play led the Colonials to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament all four years of her career, including a run to the Elite Eight in 1997. After graduating, she played in both Europe and the WNBA. Her professional career began in the Italian League, and she also played in France. When the WNBA began play in 1997, Ngongba was a member of the Sacramento Monarchs. She played with three other WNBA teams, the Detroit Shock, the Seattle Storm and the Phoenix Mercury, before concentrating solely on coaching.
The Colonials finished last season with a 22-8 record and won the regular season Atlantic 10 Championship. GW received an at-large bid to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. It marked the 11th time in the past 14 seasons that the Colonials had participated in the "Big Dance."
