TAIPEI, TAIWAN - George Washington rising senior women's basketball player Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the U.S. to an 83-72 victory over Chinese Taipei-A and the bronze medal at the 2007 William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan on Tuesday.
Team USA won its final four games to tie Chinese Taipei-B with a 4-2 pool-play record at the annual international event named for FIBA founder and promoter Renato William Jones. However, after falling to Chinese Taipei-B and defending world champion Australia in its first two games, Team USA was awarded the bronze. The U.S. rolled past Japan (114-72), Korea (94-68), New Zealand (81-60) and Chinese Taipei-A in its last four games to medal at the event for the 18th time overall and first since last fielding a team in 2000.
Lawrence averaged 7.2 points on 40.0 percent shooting, 5.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals in just over 25 minutes per game during the six-game tournament. Lawrence narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards in Monday's victory against New Zealand and also posted 10 points and seven rebounds versus Japan on Friday, July 13.
Team USA was coached by Texas A&M assistant Vic Schaefer and sponsored by Athletes in Action, an associate member of USA Basketball. Lawrence was joined on Team USA by Rachel Allyson and Jhasmin Player of Baylor, Heather Ezell of Iowa State, Briann January of Arizona State, Jackie McFarland of Colorado, La Toya Micheaux of Texas A&M, Angie Nelp of Colorado State, Kendra Reed of Southern Mississippi, Leah Rush of Oklahoma, Brittanie Taylor-James of North Carolina A&T and Kaite Collins.
Lawrence led GW in scoring for the second straight season in 2006-07, averaging 13.4 points on 46.0 percent shooting (171-of-372) to earn second team All-Atlantic 10 honors and help the Colonials reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. She also added 3.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game, good for 13th and fifth in the A-10, respectively.
